Yes! You can’t smell ebooks! Well, I guess you can, but you’ll get the screen all oily.

A cross between The Handmaid’s Tale and The Scarlet Letter, this explosive novel imagines a world that feels all too imminent: One where politics and religion have merged into one terrifying force.  In it, criminals are essentially inked with colors that represent the crimes for which they’ve been convicted.  Hannah’s color is red - for murder.  Her victim?  Her unborn child.  When she’s released into the community, she is shunned by her family and judged (negatively or compassionately) based on the color of her skin.  As she struggles in a fight for her own dignity, she discovers the lengths that people on all sides are willing to go to in order to achieve their goals.  Bound to ignite lively conversation and heated debate, Jordan leaves no soul unscathed.

“Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil” is based on the book by John Berendt.  It’s inspired by actual people and events that occurred in Savannah, GA.  When Clint Eastwood made the film version (which is nowhere near as good as the book is), he was able to include some of the actual characters from the book.

It’s well known by now that, in the film, The Lady Chablis is played by…The Lady Chablis.  A character from the book who’s story did not make it to the movie is Emma Kelly, Savannah’s “Lady of 6000 Songs.”  She does, however, appear playing the piano during the party scene early in the film.  Attorney Sonny Seiler is a major character during the trial scenes of the film…but the actual Sonny Seiler plays the judge during these scenes.  But my favorite actual character to appear in the film is UGA, the mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs.  Of course, the one referenced in the book is UGA IV…his son UGA V plays him in the film.

"I merely say that all reading for pleasure is escape, whether it be Greek, mathematics, astronomy, Benedetto Croce, or The Diary of the Forgotten Man. To say otherwise is to be an intellectual snob, and a juvenile at the art of living."

"I expected, ahem, to have a career a lot like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s. I was going to write a great novel, sell a lot of copies, and maybe end up in Paris drinking champagne out of ladies’ slippers."
